1. Song Meaning:

This song came from my pastor, Gregg Matte's, message during his Nehemiah series.

Nehemiah said "God is my reward".

That phrase jumped out to me and I immediately wrote it down in my journal during his sermon. At that point I knew God had a song for that phrase.

Because of the salvation that God offers through Jesus, I have an eternal hope and am no longer in chains to this world and the death that I deserved. I have a new life in Christ. As I read through Romans, it gives me great comfort and perspective on my life and how God views me. During 2007 I went through Romans frequently. This song came out during one of those times with God.

Gregg did a message that addressed how Christians are to respond to Islam. His overall message was calling us back to what believers are supposed to be known for…"their love".

  4. Song Meaning:

This was my prayer of surrender when seeking God's direction for my life. I was specifically praying through whether I should continue leading worship with my brothers full time with our band "Until Then", or come serve at Houston's First Baptist Church in a staff capacity. My heart's desire was to be in the center of God's will, and I knew that's where God's blessing would be on my life.

  5. Song Meaning:

There were a lot of really difficult things happening to those around me that made me ask God "why?". Tom's daughter in law was diagnosed with brain cancer. Gregg Matte's wife had a miscarriage a few weeks after announcing their pregnancy to the church, and his mother in law was fighting breast cancer. Jason Swiggart's mother was diagnosed with cancer. My sister and her husband had been wanting to have a baby for a few years and were unable to get pregnant.

All of this was contrasted with a few friends who came across as having God all figured out and knowing how He thought. There was a very huge gap between the reality of life circumstances around me and the attitude of a few of my friends. This tension in my mind came out in a song as I read through Romans one evening.

In the Fall of 2001, just after the terror attacks of 9/11, I was sitting in a campus Bible study at Howard Payne University when I read through this scripture. The text could not have been a more welcome promise of hope in a season marred with fear. I went home that night and put this Psalm to music.

This old hymn had been one that I hadn't sung a lot before, but for whatever reason began playing with my brother, Chris, during a visit home from college. We had been having a jam session together and began playing this song. The bridge we added, came to us during that worship time together.

The original song describes the world that God has created to praise Him and bring glory to Him as He rules over it. In the same breath, like all of creation, I wanted to declare that my life is God's and was created for His glory.

  10. Song Meaning:

My prayer to God was very simple during a difficult stretch of days. My boss/mentor had resigned from the church in order to take care of his family as his daughter in law was dying of brain cancer. I had assumed a very heavy weight of responsibilities along with those sad circumstances.

Again, this was my prayer straight to God. I was worn thin in every way, and knew I couldn't make it without Him. I was crying out to Him for His strong and fresh presence to be poured on my life.

  11. Song Meaning:

My brothers and I had just finished an audition to work for Centrifuge Camps as one of their worship bands for the upcoming summer of 2003. I was beginning the two hour drive back to college and was a little uptight about the outcome. I just began singing this chorus – laying my hopes and desires down to God for whatever He thought best.

I later added the 2nd part of the verse in 2007 to help the song flow better in its flow of thought.

I wrote this song when I was 17 yrs old: I was sitting in my family's recliner recovering from having my wisdom teeth taken out. Even at that time I could sense the destructive effects of disobedience in areas of my life. Parts of my heart were calloused from doing things my way, and I wanted God to change me, to revive my heart and make it like His.

This song came from a personal time of worship as I was quoting this scripture and declaring God's majesty.
